Great news to hear that the number of plastic bags found on the seabed has fallen following the introduction of a charge for carrier bags.

The 5p charge on carrier bags was introduced by Liberal Democrats in government, in the face of Conservative opposition.

It is the right policy to help protect our environment, but the government must now go further and back the Liberal Democrat call to introduce a charge on disposable coffee cups.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Vince Cable spoke on the BBC regarding developments in Syria.

In the next few days, the Government may ask MPs to act on Syria. If they do, this is how the Liberal Democrats will approach it:

Firstly, in advance of any debate or vote, the Government should share with Parliament what evidence it has of the Syrian Government’s involvement, and that of their Russian backers, in last weekend’s attack.

Secondly, the Government must present the objectives of any proposed action to Parliament. Any proposed action should be targeted at reducing the capacity of the Syrian regime to repeat these attacks.

Thirdly, any response should be on a multilateral basis. A unilateral response by any country, outside of a wider strategy, without the support of their allies is not the way forward.

And of course, there MUST be a full and frank debate and vote in the House of Commons ahead of any military action. We will judge any military action the Government proposes against these tests.

This is not a decision we will make lightly, or without the fullest consideration of the evidence.

I'm incredibly lucky to have secured a debate on the cost of patient transfer in the House of Commons. It'll be a great opportunity to raise the huge distances and intolerable burdens placed upon people taking their friends and loved ones to hospital appointments.

CONSERVATION AREAS

Did you know Horwich has several conservation areas? These include the town centre along Chorley Old Road and Wallsuches around Arcon Village and Ridgemont House.

The documents for these areas can be found here
moss.bolton.gov.uk/sites/DocumentCentre/Documents/WallsuchesCA.pdf

and

moss.bolton.gov.uk/sites/DocumentCentre/Documents/HorwichTCCA.pdf

These conservation areas have existed since 1987!

We're concerned that, having read through the documents, Bolton Council is not following it's own planning requirements. Recently, many 20MPH road signs have been put up, which break the conservation area as they are not painted black.

We were also surprised to learn that 'internally illuminated shop signs' are not allowed and should not be given planning permission. Clearly, this has not been enforced (see Sainsburys or William Hill for examples of internally illuminated signs) and the council is failing in it's duties to protect our towns unique environment.

Your local Lib Dem team are pushing the council to explain why, none of these conservation areas have been enforced, and why the council itself sees fit to break it, and how we can make sure it IS enforced moving forwards.

The recent gender pay gap reporting has revealed persistent under-representation of women at the top of organisations, which shows we are failing to make the best use of our human capital. This is not only a glaring injustice, but it is economically stupid.

The recent burglaries across East Dunbartonshire have brought fear and anxiety to families across the community. In Parliament on Monday, I raised the issue and secured a meeting with the Minister of State for Security to discuss the need for a UK-wide response to the thefts, which have taken place all over the country. Comprehensive and co-ordinated action is needed to bring the organised criminals responsible to justice.

I would encourage any constituents who have been affected by the burglaries to contact me by email on jo.swinson.mp@parliament.uk, and I will do my best to raise these concerns when I meet with the Minister.
