Last night North Derbyshire Liberal Democrats gained another council seat on Tupton Parish Council.
On one of the coldest, dampest (and even snowiest) days of the year, voters in Tupton put June Hancock at the top of the poll; gaining the Liberal Democrats a fourth Councillor on Tupton Parish. The Labour Party successfully retained the second seat, as their candidate David Parmley narrowly beat Lib Dem Keith Windley by 23 votes. Overall the Lib Dems took just under 51.7% of the vote.
Cllr June Hancock said: “It’s a real privilege to be elected to represent the community where I have lived most of my life. I was five years old when I moved to Tupton; so it’s where I grew up, married and raised a family. I’m passionate about both the community and the people who live in it.
“I live right by the primary school and across from the village hall; so I have the position of being familiar with so many people and the issues that affect them; so now, at Parish level at least, I’m in a position to be able to do something about it.”
Cllr David Hancock added: “Obviously, there’s a huge personal pride in having my own mother elected. She’s a strong and independent person and, naturally, a generation removed from me, so has a different perspective on the needs and aspirations of our community.
“To gain a fourth councillor in just over a year is a tremendous achievement and for the people of Tupton to put their confidence in us again is a trust that we both respect and honour.
“I am, of course, sad that Keith just missed out. He’s a terrific candidate and would have brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Council. However, I would like to congratulate David Parmley on his election and look forward to working with him.”
Keith Windley added: “It was a huge honour to be selected as a Lib Dem candidate for Tupton Parish Council. My congratulations to June, who will be an excellent councillor; and also to Labour’s David Parmley on his election.
“I want to personally thank everyone who put their faith in me on this occasion; and look forward to having the opportunity to represent you at some point in the future.”
The final word goes to Local Party Chair, Ross Shipman: “I’m proud of each and every one of our team, it’s an inspiration to me to see what we’ve created from nothing in such a short space of time.
“I couldn’t have asked for two better candidates and I am delighted with this result. June will be a fantastic councillor and a great addition to the Lib Dem group already there. As with all of our councillors, she’s a believer in People Before Politics and the people of the parish are clearly seeing the Lib Dem way of getting things moving and done in the right way.”
