On 12th December, voters are going to the polls across the constituency to vote for their next representative in North East Derbyshire. Incumbent Tory MP for North East Derbyshire, Lee Rowley, has been telling residents he wants to 'continue all the good work' he has been doing. So, let's have a look at what he has done and what he now means by that: Local government funding Tories have reduced local government funding reduced by 56% since 2017-2018. Since being elected, Lee has consistently cut local government funding. Urgent action needed in mental health and learning disability services – Lib Dems

Urgent action needed in mental health and learning disability services – Lib Dems

Health
Today the publication of CQC’s ‘State of Care 2018/19’ report reveals a rise of inpatient services for people with learning disabilities and/or autism that were rated inadequate. The report also shows a rise of child and adolescent mental health inpatient services rated inadequate. Responding to the report, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Vince Cable said: “It is rare for a public body such as the Care Quality Commission to be so scathing of the effects of Government policy. Their honesty is to be congratulated. “They highlight graphically the decline in standards for mental health and learning disability inpatient services. This means some of the most vulnerable are not receiving anything like the standards of care that they need. “Staffing shortages, coupled with inadequate funding solutions…

Compulsory voter ID is an attempt to rig our elections

Compulsory voter ID is an attempt to rig our elections

Democracy
Responding to the reports that the Government are set to announce it will be compulsory for voters to show identification at the next election, Liberal Democrat shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, Tom Brake said:“The move by the Government to make voter ID compulsory is a thinly-veiled attempt to rig the results of future elections. We know from the pilot back in 2018 that voter fraud was inconsequential, whilst what the pilot did do was turn away a disproportionate number of vulnerable voters. "Boris Johnson is clearly taking a leaf out of Trump's playbook by using false claims about voter fraud to suppress turnout. “The trial was deemed a waste of time and the public’s money, and this roll-out will be no different. The Conservative Government have already showed disdain…

Police
This afternoon, NEDDC Lib Dem Group Leader Cllr Ross Shipman and Deputy Leader Cllr David Hancock visited the Derbyshire Police Operations Centre in Ripley. The visit followed a number of complaints into the police's handling of 101 calls in recent months. Both councillors were shown the call handling and dispatch centre and had an abridged version of the training operations staff have recently undertaken. The police were certainly open enough to admit that they have made mistakes, and they have put processes in place to improve some of their call handling. Their revised procedures should also ensure that where issues are passed to other agencies (e.g. Councils, Social Services or even the Safer Neighbourhood Teams) the person lodging the initial call should be updated. One area where the force is…

Equality
It is time the House grew up, realised how our constituents are living out there, stopped hiding in the past, and removed this odious legislation from the statute book once and for all.Ed Davey MP, 2003. In 2003, the Lib Dems tabled an amendment to the Local Government Bill to repeal Section 28, and voted unanimously in favour of it. On the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, we recognise just how far LGBT rights have come. Sadly we're still a little way from achieving full equality as events in Birmingham these past few months have shown. Equal rights means equal rights for all. In a truly liberal society we embrace our diversity - its those differences that make us stronger, and we should not allow them to divide us.…

Lib Dems slam Labour’s Lip Service over Climate Emergency

Environment
On 6th Feb, North Derbyshire Liberal Democrats’ Environmental spokesperson, Cllr Ben Marshall joined Sheffield Liberal Democrats, members of North Derbyshire Young Liberals and Sheffield Green Party to protest Sheffield City Council’s hollow Climate Emergency motion. Labour’s motion proposed that the council take steps to make Sheffield carbon neutral by 2050 – a full 20 years later than many other parts of the country. Labour actually voted down a Lib Dem amendment which would have seen the deadline brought forward to 2030. Cllr Marshall said: “As usual, we’re just seeing Labour playing games. They see that Climate Change is an important topic so they jump on the bandwagon without putting any effort into meaningful policy. "This is a global problem that needs to be tackled as a priority and opposing an…
