Thank you for the help and support you have given North Derbyshire Liberal Democrats over the last few weeks. Many of you, me included, didn’t get into politics because we wanted an easy ride, we got involved because we wanted to make a difference and stand tall on our social and liberal values. Elections are never easy as one of the smaller parties in a first past the post electoral system, but as predicted, what we saw here was the collapse of the Labour Party that gifted the Tories this majority, and a significant increase to the Lib Dems votes across the UK to 3,696,423 (an increase of over 1.2 million). If this was under a proportional electoral system, this result would have delivered 74 MP's for the Liberal Democrats. More…

The Economy Both Brexit and the Labour Party's excessive spending plans threaten our country's future economic stability. That isn't just our opinion, the IFS is saying it too. A vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to protect British jobs and public services. The NHS Save the NHS by putting a penny in the pound on income tax to give the NHS and social care the cash they need. Make waiting times for mental health care match those for physical health care. Climate Change Ban fracking, and more than double green energy to 80% by 2030. Ensure that 26 million properties receive insulation retrofits by 2025, prioritising the fuel poor, saving the average household £550 per year on energy bills. Compulsory voter ID is an attempt to rig our elections

Responding to the reports that the Government are set to announce it will be compulsory for voters to show identification at the next election, Liberal Democrat shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, Tom Brake said:“The move by the Government to make voter ID compulsory is a thinly-veiled attempt to rig the results of future elections. We know from the pilot back in 2018 that voter fraud was inconsequential, whilst what the pilot did do was turn away a disproportionate number of vulnerable voters. Future Women MPs Training Weekend

The success of so many women in these local and Euro elections has led to more funding in order to encourage women to engage in politics. I'm proud of the fact that in my own parish, I'm one of six women councillors (five Lib Dem and one Labour). The first time ever that Tupton has had more women Parish Councillors than men. The glass ceilings can be broken - and, as I'm sure you already know, we Lib Dems don't like glass ceilings (unless they're in a conservatory!!!) As such, the party is running a Future Women MPs Training Weekend on July 20-21, 2019 at Milton Keynes. Making The Council More Accountable

Britain suffers from a political system with a lack of openness and accountability. North Derbyshire is unrepresentative of the electorate, and local government is hobbled by central control, and people feel they have no effective means of making known their concerns and priorities. It’s no wonder people feel frustrated and angry at the system. We believe in a District where people have power over their own lives and how their Districtis run. To make this happen, we need to revitalise our political system – strengthening devolution and increasing trust in the Council to deliver for local people.
