Lib Dems demand end to fracking

Energy, Environment
The Liberal Democrats are demanding the Conservative Government end their support for shale gas and to step up efforts to tackle climate change. Liberal Democrat Climate Change spokesperson Wera Hobhouse, along with a cross-party group of MPs from Lib Dems, Labour, Independents and Greens have written to the Government demanding an end to shale gas extraction. The letter states that climate change is an emergency and that the Government must focus entirely on zero-carbon energy if we are to meet our climate change commitments. Liberal Democrat Climate Change Spokesperson Wera Hobhouse MP said: “It is incomprehensible that this Government continues to support the exploration of shale gas in the UK. North Derbyshire Lib Dems respond to Harthill Against Fracking decision

Energy, Environment
In response to the news that Harthill Against Fracking have lost their legal case against the decision for an Ineos shale gas well to be sited near their homes; Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for N-E Derbyshire, Ross Shipman said: “This makes a nonsense of Lee Rowley’s position that local people should be allowed to decide on fracking applications in their area. “The government has ridden roughshod over the wishes and concerns of local residents to push through this unwanted practice. “Environmental issues don’t stop at constituency boundaries. The proximity of Harthill to North East Derbyshire is a concern to our residents. The numerous suspension of operations at Preston New Road have shown time and time again that the practice is not considered safe. “The Liberal Democrats call on the government…

Farron warns of ‘catastrophic Climate Change’ unless fossil fuels remain in the ground during Fracking debate

Energy, Environment
Former Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron warns of 'catastrophic Climate Change' unless fossil fuels 'remain in the ground' during a Westminster Hall Fracking debate held on 31st October 2019. In Spring 2016, the Liberal Democrats adopted the policy of banning fracking in England and Wales and it was a key focus in their 2017 General Election manifesto. Tim Farron said: "Classifying fracking rigs under the banner of permitted development is a subversion of the planning process and therefore a subversion of local democracy. Permitted development was created for conservatories, small extensions and outhouses, none of which to the best of my knowledge have ever caused an earth tremor, yet we see fracking rigs potentially being given rights under permitted development, which is a cynical disgrace." "The subversion of the…

Lib Dems: Tories are betraying our chance for cleaner, safer future

Energy, Environment
The letter from the Solar Trade Association, with hundreds of stakeholder signatories, calling on Energy Minister Claire Perry to confirm the continuation of the 'export tariff', which works alongside the Feed-In Tariff to ensure that small solar generators are remunerated fairly for the energy they feed into the grid, Ed Davey, former Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, said: “After the blistering heatwave this summer, even Conservative Ministers should have realised the urgency of rolling out more green energy, especially small scale solar power but once again they’re betraying our chance for a cleaner, safer future. “It’s now beyond doubt that the Conservatives have lost the plot when it comes to fighting climate change and backing the low carbon power we need. “Solar support has already been cut drastically…
