Not In My Back Yard

Not In My Back Yard

A commentary by Cllr David Hancock It is with some sadness and disappointment that I read the press release that former Labour MP for N-E Derbyshire, Natascha Engel, has been commissioned by INEOS Shale. We already know that the current Conservative MP, Lee Rowley, supports the process - albeit not in his own back yard. Fracking is something I am not in favour of. I'm not a scientist. I don't pretend to understand all the technical arguments put forward by both the pro and anti fracking supporters; but I know when I am being lied to. As a liberal the choice to ban anything is a difficult one; and it's not a conclusion I reached easily. I have attended both anti-fracking meetings AND a presentation by INEOS (naturally) in favour…

A Vision for Britain: Clean, Green and Carbon Free

Environment
Responding to the Government's 'Clean Growth Strategy', Liberal Democrats leader Vince Cable said: “This strategy is a year late and is a damp squib. It is an inadequate response to tackling climate change, one of the greatest threats to our economy and our planet. We need a far more radical plan. Britain is on course to miss our climate change targets in the Paris Agreement and this does not change that. “While additional funding for renewables is welcome, we need to see far more investment in cutting-edge technologies such as tidal power and a wide-scale plan for insulating people’s leaky homes. “One of the most important aspects of this strategy is investment in carbon capture and storage. Remember when Tory MP for North East Derbyshire, Lee Rowley, tells local residents he opposes fracking, but said he wouldn't vote to ban it if it came to parliament? We do and so does that wafer thin majority he had to gain his seat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwNIP_fiY-U&t=3s We need to pressure our elected representatives to put our communities first - they should not be able to get away with this smoke and mirrors politics. #Working4You #BanFracking

Scottish Fracking Ban

Scottish Fracking Ban

Environment
Responding to the news that the Scottish government has banned fracking after a public consultation, Liberal Democrats Energy and Climate Change spokesperson Lynne Featherstone said: "This is a welcome move from the Scottish government. Fracking is economically questionable, deeply unpopular in local communities up and down the country, not to mention a disaster for our environment. "Yet again, Theresa May is finding herself on the wrong side of the argument. #Fracking is simply a fig leaf for her government's failures on decarbonising heating. "May should follow the Scottish government's lead and bring a ban on fracking below the border into effect immediately."
