The Liberal Democrats are demanding the Conservative Government end their support for shale gas and to step up efforts to tackle climate change.
Liberal Democrat Climate Change spokesperson Wera Hobhouse, along with a cross-party group of MPs from Lib Dems, Labour, Independents and Greens have written to the Government demanding an end to shale gas extraction. The letter states that climate change is an emergency and that the Government must focus entirely on zero-carbon energy if we are to meet our climate change commitments.
Liberal Democrat Climate Change Spokesperson Wera Hobhouse MP said:
“It is incomprehensible that this Government continues to support the exploration of shale gas in the UK. Climate change is an emergency that needs to be dealt with now, we must focus on renewable energy rather than being distracted by more fossil fuels. Liberal Democrats demand better for our planet.
“In a week when Greta Thunberg visited parliament it is time the Tories start taking climate change seriously. A big, meaningful step they could take now is to end the fracking experiment. Liberal Democrats would end fracking immediately and divert all its funding into renewables.”
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for North Derbyshire, Ross Shipman said:
“Words don’t protect our climate for this impending emergency we are undoubtedly facing. Words don’t stop greenhouse gases and plastics we can’t recycle. What will solve these issues are firm action from the Tories in Government.”
“The Lib Dems will work cross-party to achieve the success of reducing the effects of climate change, but this must begin by banning fracking in England and Wales.
