Norman Lamb on Vaping

Norman Lamb argues for reviewing approval systems for prescribing e-cigarettes.

“E-cigarettes are a key weapon in reducing overall levels of smoking and the related health risks.”

Mr Lamb went on to say: “We have a big opportunity to reduce the dreadful death toll from smoking – which kills a staggering 79,000 people in England every year. People with mental ill health particularly affected, with smoking rates still around 40%.”

Transitioning people onto e-cigarettes can be a key weapon in tackling levels of smoking and saving lives in the long term.

In response to criticisms of the proposals, Norman said: “I personally don’t like vaping close to me – and any restaurant, bus or train company can decide whether to ban vaping in specified areas – but let’s at least make decisions on the basis of evidence – secondary smoking kills. Our evidence should same risk does NOT apply to vaping.”

Lib Dem District Councillor for Tupton, David Hancock, fully supports the proposals: “My father and grandmother both died from lung cancer. It’s one of the most terrible and prolonged deaths to watch (because that’s all you can do). I absolutely applaud this. It has the potential to reach more people than the smoking ban was ever going to. Positive & proactive action.”
