North East Derbyshire District Council criticised for selling land and approving 193 executive homes in Tupton

In February 2018, North East Derbyshire District Council recently agreed to take out a £8.663million in borrowing to facilitate the development of the land off Ankerbold Road, Tupton by the Northwood Group, an entity which is controlled by North East Derbyshire District Council in conjunction with private developers.

On 18th December 2018, North East Derbyshire District Council planning committee approve a planning application submitted by the Northwood Group to build 193 executive homes on the site. 10 voted FOR and 4 AGAINST.

Liberal Democrats Councillor for the Tupton ward on NEDDC, David Hancock said: “North East Derbyshire Labour have forced through this vanity project because of the money it will generate and ignored the hundreds of objections from local residents.”

“In our objections, the Lib Dems highlighted a number of infrastructure concerns including Tupton Primary unable to physically expand any further and severe congestion that already exists because of traffic coming into the village for Tupton Hall School.”

“It is even more concerning that the Planning Officers had no answer for why they were going against their own policy of every new build must be within a 30 minute public travel time of an hospital by public transport.”

“North East Derbyshire District Council are selling future generations down the river.”

Spokesperson for North Derbyshire Liberal Democrats, Ross Shipman said: “What we oversaw from that planning committee was a stitch-up of Tupton residents.”

“Not once were the 200 objections from local residents referred to and any point made were either dismissed or ignored. This is totally unacceptable.””Our position remains that even if the infrastructure was sound; it saddens the us that council land has been lost to build 3,4 and 5 bedroom homes, instead of increasing their social housing stock and providing affordable homes for our children to get on the housing ladder.”
