Jo Swinson MP, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, has claimed victory in her bid to ensure that Government departments publish parental leave and pay policies and she is now calling on employers to act too.
Following analysis by the Liberal Democrats which uncovered that only four departments had published paternity, maternity, shared parental and adoption leave arrangements on their websites, the Government has pledged to publish these details for all departments.
Jo Swinson has now set her sights on ensuring employers act too. The former Employment Relations Minister is currently pursuing a Private Member’s Bill which would require employers with more than 250 employees to publish information about parental leave and pay entitlements.
Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats Jo Swinson MP said:
“Given the Government’s ambition for the Civil Service to become the most inclusive employer by 2020, this announcement is welcome.
“However, if Theresa May wants to be a reformer she must back my Bill and require all large organisations to match the civil service pledge.
“If parental leave and pay remain in the shadows the system will be perpetually unfair. There is no silver bullet to eradicating the discrimination that far too many parents still face in our workplaces but transparency will improve practice and change people’s mindsets.”
